Artist Talk - with Bindi Cole Chocka

Jul 18 | NewHope Blackburn | Free

7:30pm in Events Room 6

NewHope Community Care welcomes back award winning, Melbourne born, artist Bindi Cole Chocka, for an evening of inspiration and reflection. She will give an Artist's Talk focusing on her works currently on display at NewHope.

Chocka’s work often references her life story and experiences, such as her aboriginal heritage, the importance of Christianity in her life, and the impact of politics, the law and other power structures on her lived experience and that of her family and community. Her deeply personal and powerful artistic practice questions the way people circumscribe and misconstrue contemporary identity and experience. Chocka works to expose the questions most are afraid to ask.

Please RSVP online to assist us with catering.

GriefShare at NewHope

July 31 (13 Weeks) | NewHope Blackburn | $30

Healing from your grief is not easy. It’s a long, sometimes painful process.

We want to help you on your journey toward recovery. “Going to GriefShare feels like having warm arms wrapped around you when you’re shivering.”

How GriefShare works

It may be hard for you to feel optimistic about the future right now. If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel.

This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before.

GriefShare groups meet weekly to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. Each GriefShare session has three distinct elements: 1) Video seminar with experts,

2) Support group discussion with focus, and

3) Personal study and reflection.

Who should come … who should not

GriefShare is for people grieving the death of a family member or friend. We understand that there are other losses in life that create feelings of grief. You might be experiencing a job loss, a divorce, estrangement from a child, or the loss of friends because of a move. This grief is real, but it is not the kind of grief discussed in GriefShare sessions. We encourage you to ask a pastor, counselor, or church leader for help in finding resources that will be of specific help in your situation.

The leadership team for GriefShare consists of people who understand how you feel and have a real concern for individuals experiencing the grief of loss. Most GriefShare leaders have experienced significant losses in their lives and are examples of the healing and restoration that can occur as an outgrowth of deep grief.

The group at NewHope is moderated by Deb McQuilkin. Deb is a widow from America, living here in Australia to be near her family. For over 40 years, Deb has facilitated many small groups, teaching principles of Christian living. She is author of James: an Inductive Approach published by PCA Publishing. She has four grown children and recently retired from the University of South Carolina where she taught Health Systems Administration. Her husband, Robertson McQuilkin, was a missionary statesman and former president of Columbia International University. He died in 2016.

Global Leadership Summit 2019

NewHope is the largest of the 25 Australian sites which together will host more than 6000 Aussie leaders. The conference is targeted at leaders in every domain and while its heart and soul is Christian, those who have little or no faith tell us again and again how much they appreciate the content and love the experience. Bring a work colleague, your team, your teenagers, your small group, your whole street – you won’t be disappointed.
